Chapter 5

Izzy

Wilson walked up to me as I sat in the library the next day. I had found myself a hidden place. I didn’t think anyone would come find me. I thought that I had privacy to keep up with the work that I needed to do. Especially now that I had some time to make up my work for being sick.

The past few days had been a rush of excitement. Everyone had wanted to talk to me. My instructors had helped me learn new skills to control my powers and how to work in crowds. I had been avoiding large groups of people, but there was some trouble in classes. Still, I had standing permission to walk out whenever I needed to get air.

On top of that, people weren’t picking on me anymore. In fact, a lot of the students were actively avoiding me. Compared to my roommates, I felt pretty lucky in that regard. They were still getting bothered by the kids that came from money and well-connected families. But no one dared to say a negative thing to me anymore.

I had realized I needed breaks more often than not though. I couldn’t go a whole day without secluding myself somewhere.

So, I found the hiding spots around campus. Places that I could be alone and in public areas. Like this back corner of the library. It was darker than the rest of the place and it was easy to get lost in the large university library.

But the thing about hidden places… It can get hard to see someone slipping closer to you as long as they don’t make too much of a fuss.

I was snacking on some carrot sticks as I pecked at my laptop. My focus was completely engrossed on the textbook in front of me. But eventually, Wilson cleared his throat.

I looked up at the blond guy and frowned. He slid into a seat next to me anyway. “This seat taken?”

“Looks like it is now.” My voice was not kind, dripping with the kind of venom that only came with strong emotion.

“I wanted to talk.”

“Let me guess. Now you want to be friendly. Now you want to apologize.”

“I was hoping to.” Wilson sighed heavily. “Look, it was messed up how I acted towards you.”

“It was beyond messed up,” I snapped at him. “It was cruel. And I’m not the only one that you’ve done this too.”

“Look, I saw what you did to the cafeteria.”

“Yeah. I was there,” I grumbled.

“I made a mistake. I discounted you. And you turned out to be something amazing.”

“I’m not a thing.” My voice was raising.

“I’m trying to apologize.”

“You’re only apologizing now because this whole thing came up.”

He sighed. “I know you’re not going to let me off easy, but I have to try. I was wrong, yes. Learning what you are was what showed me how wrong I was.”

“You expect me to believe that you’re not a horrible excuse for a person anymore?”

“It was a mistake.”
